Delegates from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) gathered in Montgomery on April 7 for the Alabama State Council meeting, where members discussed legislative priorities and actions affecting working families across the state.
The event brought together more than 45 participants who focused on defending union rights, addressing corporate influence, protecting retirement security, supporting veterans, and encouraging civic engagement. The gathering also included presentations from elected officials and candidates who pledged to support pro-worker legislation.
“This is about making sure working people have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “We’re fighting back against corporate power and pushing for policies that put workers first because when working families advance, our communities advance.”
IAM Political and Legislative Director Hasan Solomon said member involvement in politics is essential. “Being politically engaged isn’t optional – it’s essential,” said Solomon. “The decisions being made at every level of government directly impact our union, our jobs, our rights, and our futures. When IAM members show up, they listen.”
During the meeting, delegates visited the Alabama State Capitol to lobby lawmakers on behalf of workers’ interests. IAM Alabama State Council President Rickie Langford highlighted the significance of collective action: “This meeting shows the power of bringing members together with a shared purpose,” said Langford. “When we unite, educate, and take action, we can move the needle for working people across Alabama.”
A milestone was reached during elections for Executive Board officers as Michelle Hunt of IAM Local 2003 became the council’s first woman president. Hunt said: “I’m honored to be elected and to serve alongside such dedicated members. I’m committed to continuing the work of pushing forward an agenda that puts working people first and strengthens our union across Alabama.” Other officers elected include Secretary-Treasurer Marc Johnson (IAM Local 2003), Vice Presidents Duane Williams (South), Anthony Holton (South), Rickie Langford (North), and James Tate (North).
The council reaffirmed its commitment to building worker power through education, engagement, and direct action.
