The Duke Energy Foundation announced on Apr. 27 a commitment of $1 million to nonprofit organizations across North Carolina that provide essential community services such as housing stability, food access, health care, and utility assistance.
This funding aims to help organizations that are assisting residents with basic needs, especially vulnerable populations like seniors. The initiative comes as many North Carolinians face challenges related to aging and maintaining independence.
According to Kendal Bowman, Duke Energy’s North Carolina president, “Community partners play an essential role across the state by delivering trusted, on-the-ground support and connecting neighbors to resources that help them remain safe, healthy and independent. We’re grateful for their leadership and dedication to making the communities we serve stronger.”
Of the total commitment, $500,000 will be distributed through grants of up to $25,000 each for up to 20 nonprofits focused on supporting seniors in areas such as housing assistance and food programs. Applications for these grants are open until May 29. Another $500,000 will go toward Share the Light Fund agencies statewide; these agencies assist residents with utility-related needs and other critical services. More than $1 million has already been distributed through the Share the Light Fund in 2026 so far.
The Duke Energy Foundation provides nearly $30 million annually in philanthropic support funded by company shareholders. Duke Energy itself serves millions of electric and natural gas customers across several states from its headquarters in Charlotte.
