Film Florida announced on March 31 that it is inviting the public to participate as Audience Choice voters in its statewide Student Film Competition. The initiative gives high school and college students a chance to showcase their short films, which were created during a ten-day challenge using specific props, prompts, and lines of dialogue.

The competition highlights the creativity and teamwork of aspiring filmmakers across Florida. Audience Choice voters will have early access to all participating films through Film Florida’s new streaming platform, Film Florida TV. Voting is open from March 31 to April 10, allowing viewers not only to support emerging talent but also to beta test the platform before its official launch this summer.

All student films will be featured during a virtual film festival on April 28 via Film Florida TV. The streaming service is free and aims to host curated content from filmmakers throughout the state. In total, students are competing for eleven awards, with the Audience Choice Award being determined by public votes.

“We’re thrilled to have 30 talented teams participate in the first year of the Film Florida Student Film Competition, we’re excited to showcase their films and celebrate their outstanding work by providing a prize awarded by their peers,” says John Lux, Executive Director of Film Florida. “Thanks to all of our members that helped with this new initiative especially our partners from Film Tampa Bay.”

Besides the Audience Choice Award, judges will recognize excellence in several categories such as Best High School Student Film, Best College Student Film, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Interested viewers can register as an Audience Choice voter at https://filmflorida.vhx.tv/challenges or vote directly at https://tinyurl.com/FFAudienceChoice.

Film Florida describes itself as a nonprofit organization supporting professional development and networking within the state’s screen production industry.
