For the eighth consecutive year, five universities within the State University System of Florida have been recognized on the Top 100 Worldwide Universities List by the National Academy of Inventors. The ranking is based on the number of utility patents granted in 2024, using data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The universities and their positions on this year’s list are as follows: University of Florida ranked 13th, maintaining its position from last year; University of South Florida moved up to 26th from 34th; University of Central Florida rose to 34th from 52nd; Florida International University advanced to 42nd from 57th; and Florida State University climbed to 55th from 90th in the previous year.

Chancellor Rodrigues of the State University System commented on this achievement, stating, “This achievement recognizes the real-world impact of administrators, faculty, and students who are focused on innovation and not indoctrination. Governor DeSantis and the Florida Legislature have recently invested more than $200M to recruit and retain top-tier faculty; this is just another example of how Florida’s efforts are paying off,” said Chancellor Rodrigues of the State University System. “These rankings show our System’s commitment to invention, research, and innovation, which leads to increased commercialization for our local communities, our state, and the nation.”

The Top 100 Worldwide Universities List highlights institutions that have demonstrated a high output in securing utility patents during the calendar year. According to information provided by the National Academy of Inventors, these rankings are based solely on patent data and do not necessarily reflect a university’s overall technology value or success in bringing inventions to market.
