The arrival of fall in Florida is marked not by changing leaves, but by the start of the citrus harvest season. Steve Johnson, Chairman of the Florida Citrus Commission and owner of Johnson Harvesting, Inc., highlighted this tradition in a recent statement.
Johnson noted that while other regions recognize autumn through seasonal foliage changes, Floridians associate it with the harvesting of citrus fruit. “It’s one of my favorite times of year, and for a good reason. We’ve worked hard all year for it, and now, Florida Citrus is ripe for the picking,” he said.
He also described a sense of determination and optimism among growers as they begin the harvest. Johnson referenced the recent Florida Citrus Commission (FCC) meeting held on October 22, where all 11 commission members participated either in person or virtually. Industry partners were also present to provide updates and recommendations from various committees within the Florida Department of Citrus.
Johnson reminded stakeholders that FCC meetings are not typically scheduled in November. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, December 17 at 9:00 a.m. at the commission’s headquarters in Bartow.
The Florida Citrus Commission oversees activities related to the state’s citrus industry through its work with the Florida Department of Citrus.
