The Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) is encouraging residents to focus on energy conservation during National Energy Awareness Month in October. The agency notes that making thoughtful choices about energy use can help lower utility bills and give consumers more control over their household expenses.
“Energy Awareness Month highlights the power of making smart energy choices,” said FPSC Chairman Mike La Rosa. “When consumers take simple steps to conserve energy, they not only lower their monthly utility bills but also gain more control over their household costs.”
Florida ranks as the second-largest producer of electricity in the United States, following Texas, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The state’s residential sector is a major consumer of this electricity, with households accounting for 54% of Florida’s total electricity consumption in 2023—the highest residential share among all states. This high usage is largely due to widespread dependence on air conditioning and electric heating.
The FPSC urges Floridians to treat Energy Awareness Month as an opportunity to adopt lasting habits for wise energy use throughout the year. The commission emphasizes that decisions made today can result in reduced bills and a more reliable, cost-effective energy future for everyone in the state.
