Local entrepreneurs Brian and Elizabeth McCadie have launched Transparensea, a new glass bottom boat service in Islamorada, Florida Keys. The vessel, which departs from Robbie’s Marina, offers both daytime and night tours for visitors interested in exploring the region’s marine life.
Brian McCadie, who has a background as a U.S. Coast Guard fishing charter captain, developed the concept to introduce an original attraction to the area. His wife Elizabeth, who has collaborated with him on several projects at Robbie’s Marina, supported the initiative throughout its planning and execution.
The 46-foot open-air Transparensea is equipped with 16 window wells for underwater viewing, seating for up to 30 passengers, restroom facilities, and Seakeeper technology designed to minimize seasickness. A key feature of the vessel is its underwater lighting system. This makes it the first glass bottom boat in the United States to offer night trips where guests can observe nocturnal marine animals such as sharks, turtles, coral formations, and squid illuminated beneath the surface.
“Our goal was to create something families could enjoy after dark,” said Brian McCadie. “The lights make such a difference, and the sea life is more active at night—this is truly a one-of-a-kind experience in The Keys.”
Each tour includes narration focusing on notable coral areas like Cheeca Rocks, Caloosa Rocks, and Alligator Reef. These routes are selected to give guests a closer look at local marine habitats while avoiding crowded boating locations.
Transparensea operates daily except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Two-hour tours are scheduled at noon and 3 p.m., with night excursions leaving about 20 minutes after sunset.
