The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) will hold its next Spanish Leadership I Class from April 19 to 24, 2025, at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center. The program is open to all IAM members and staff.

Members who want to attend are encouraged to contact their Local President, Business Representative, or General Chair as soon as possible. Fluency in Spanish is not required for participation, but some knowledge of the language is considered helpful.

All classroom instruction, books, and materials for the course are provided in Spanish. However, the curriculum is equivalent to that of the English Leadership programs offered by IAM. The focus remains on building leadership skills while improving connections with Spanish-speaking members and communities.

According to the IAM press release: “As our membership continues to grow and diversify, the IAM’s Spanish Leadership I Class encourages members to step up and take on greater leadership roles – building the confidence and skills needed to better represent, advocate for, and stand alongside every member on the job.”

The Spanish-language programs at Winpisinger Center are organized by the Spanish Language Working Group (SLWG), which includes both staff and union members. The curriculum covers a range of topics such as labor history, parliamentary procedure in local administration, steward responsibilities, human rights issues, organizing strategies, and government relations.

Since it began, the Spanish Leadership Program has aimed for inclusivity by providing a supportive environment for those facing language barriers. It also welcomes participants who wish to engage more deeply with colleagues whose primary language is Spanish.

Participation in these programs does not count against a Local’s regular allotment for leadership school attendance. Openings remain available for all levels of Spanish Leadership courses.

Important dates have been set for future sessions:
– Spanish Leadership I: April 19-24
– Spanish Leadership II: July 26-31
– Advanced Spanish Leadership: November 15-20

The IAM offers education and leadership development in multiple languages—including English, Spanish, and French—to ensure all workers have access to growth opportunities within their union.

For further information about registration or program details, interested individuals can contact the Winpisinger Center at 301-373-8820 or via email at w3leadership@iamaw.org.
