The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) held its General Secretary-Treasurer International Auditors Conference in Orange Beach, Ala., bringing together auditors from Locals and Districts across the United States and Canada on May 1. The event aimed to enhance coordination, share strategies, and strengthen support for union members.
The conference addressed the important role that auditors play in protecting members’ dues, promoting transparency, and maintaining high standards of financial accountability within the union’s various branches. Workshops, discussions, and real-world case studies were included to allow participants to exchange best practices for improving financial oversight while supporting members at a local level.
International Auditors work as an extension of the General Secretary-Treasurer’s Office. They collaborate with Local and District Secretary-Treasurers to protect union resources by ensuring compliance with Department of Labor regulations, Internal Revenue Service rules, as well as IAM’s own financial policies. Their efforts are intended to increase accountability and reinforce confidence among members regarding how their dues are managed.
“This conference is about making sure we are giving our International Auditors the tools, training, and support they need to succeed in a constantly evolving financial landscape,” said IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes. “Our members trust us to protect their dues and operate with transparency, and that responsibility starts with the strong, consistent work of our auditing team.”
Assistant Secretary to the General Secretary-Treasurer Paul Kendall said: “Our auditors are often the first line of defense when it comes to maintaining financial integrity across our union. By coming together, sharing experiences, and aligning on best practices, we strengthen our ability to support Districts and Locals and ensure accountability at every level.”
Special Assistant Bryan Pinette added: “The work International Auditors do goes beyond numbers – it’s about protecting the foundation of our union. This conference gives us the chance to connect, problem-solve, and continue building a system that works for our members and their future.”
As IAM adapts alongside its growing membership base into new areas or needs that arise over time, officials say that International Auditors will remain central in guaranteeing responsible management of every dollar entrusted by members.
