IAM members Richard Turner and Melissa McRonney-Apaw joined 20 other participants at the Leadership II class held at the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ (IAM) Winpisinger Education and Technology Center. Both Turner and McRonney-Apaw serve as union representatives and educators within their respective locals.
The week-long training focused on helping union members understand legislative processes, with an emphasis on effective advocacy for workers’ rights in Washington, D.C. The program highlighted that lobbying is not only a tool used by companies but is also essential for union members to advance labor issues.
Participants in the Leadership II class also addressed topics such as ethical responsibilities, member protection, and building solidarity. The training aimed to provide attendees with the skills needed to become more effective leaders within their unions.
According to those involved, the experience was both empowering and unifying, equipping them with practical knowledge to better serve their fellow members.
