Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) from across Missouri gathered in Jefferson City for the IAM Missouri State Council on April 7. The event brought together union members to address key issues affecting working families and to advocate for the protection of workers’ rights.
The gathering was significant as it centered on resisting efforts by large financial interests to change Missouri’s referendum process. According to organizers, these changes could make it easier for corporations to advance “right-to-work” laws, which they say would weaken unions and reduce wages.
During the conference, IAM members visited the state Capitol to lobby elected officials about several concerns. Their priorities included stopping paycheck deception bills, enhancing workforce development programs, increasing the minimum wage, and opposing attempts to relax child labor laws.
Updates were provided by representatives from various branches within IAM, including the International President’s Office, Midwest Territory leadership, Political and Legislative Department, and Communications Department. These sessions aimed to keep members informed about strategies and ensure coordinated action moving forward.
The conference also fostered unity among different unions affiliated with the Missouri AFL-CIO. Attendees heard remarks from bipartisan legislators who support worker issues: Senate Democratic Leader Doug Beck; State Representatives Keri Ingle, Betsy Fogle, Stephen Webber, David Casteel, Jeff Amato; and State Senator Karla May. Special recognition was given to DeWitt Darity (Missouri State Council President), Dwight Terry (Secretary-Treasurer), and other executive board members for organizing the event.
As discussions continue around proposed legislative changes in Missouri that could affect union strength or workplace protections in future sessions, IAM leaders emphasized ongoing solidarity among labor organizations.
