The federal government shutdown continues to impact workers across the country, with many members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and the National Federation of Federal Employees-IAM (NFFE-IAM) affected by missed paychecks, halted contracts, and uncertainty. Thousands of union members work for federal agencies, contractors, or in sectors that depend on federal funding, and the shutdown has led to delayed maintenance and financial instability for many families.

IAM Union International President Brian Bryant commented on the situation, stating, “The IAM Union strongly urges a bipartisan funding solution, negotiated in good faith between Democrats and Republicans, to end this shutdown. A shutdown is unjust, cruel, and devastating to working families, and we will never stand by while our members are used as leverage for political gain. The IAM also strongly condemns the White House’s threat to use a shutdown as a means to justify illegally firing scores of federal workers.”

The union is collecting stories from members affected by the shutdown to highlight its impact and support efforts to resolve the crisis. IAM and NFFE-IAM are also encouraging members to remain engaged by signing up for email updates and to report to work unless given an official furlough notice.

Union representatives continue to advocate in Washington, D.C., for an end to the shutdown and for long-term worker protections. They have called for lawmakers to be held accountable for the ongoing crisis and emphasized their commitment to supporting affected workers.

Members are advised to prepare financially for continued uncertainty and to utilize available resources, including furlough guidance and unemployment insurance information. The IAM and NFFE-IAM have stated they will continue their efforts on Capitol Hill and in workplaces during the shutdown.
