Miami officials announced on Mar. 26 that City Hall will relocate from its longtime home in Coconut Grove’s waterfront to the new Miami Freedom Park, a $1 billion mixed-use development near Miami International Airport.
The move marks a significant change for the city, as it plans to consolidate administrative offices at the new location, which is being developed by David Beckham, Jorge Mas, Jose Mas, and Ares Management. The project is being built on city-owned land that was formerly Melreese Golf Course.
The government building under construction at the 73-acre site will house all administrative functions currently split between downtown Miami and City Hall at 3500 Pan American Drive. This includes offices for the mayor, five commissioners, city clerk, and other departments. The facility is expected to be fully operational by 2028.
Nu Stadium, which will serve as home to Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami team led by Lionel Messi and owned by the same group developing Miami Freedom Park, is set to open on April 4. In addition to a 25,000-seat stadium, plans for Miami Freedom Park include one million square feet of retail space as well as offices and dining areas. The development will also feature a hotel with 750 rooms and a large park with community athletic fields. Construction of the stadium was financed through a $450 million loan from JP Morgan Chase.
The future of the current City Hall building—a former Pan Am seaplane terminal built in 1931 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places—remains uncertain. No decisions have been made about repurposing or selling the property according to statements given by city officials.
