IAM Union members from across Nebraska recently convened for the bi-annual meeting of the Nebraska State Council, which serves as the political arm of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) in the state. The gathering brought together delegates from Locals 31, 180, 602, 612, 1569, and District 6 to discuss legislative priorities and share updates from their respective locals.
A key topic during the meeting was the significance of the upcoming midterm elections. Participants discussed strategies to support candidates who advocate for collective bargaining rights, fair wages, and retirement security.
Nebraska State Council President Mike Helmink led the meeting with Secretary-Treasurer Dan Janak. Helmink addressed attendees about member involvement in politics. “Elections have real consequences for our members and their families,” said Helmink. “If we want leaders who stand with working people, we need to stay organized, informed, and active. Political action is how we protect our contracts and our future.”
IAM Assistant Political Director Ty Richardson spoke at the event, offering a national perspective on the midterm election landscape and stressing the importance of grassroots mobilization efforts. Kevin Murch and Chris Tucker, IAM Midwest Territory International Representatives, also expressed continued support for Nebraska’s political activities.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to strong political engagement as a means to advance and defend the interests of IAM members and working families across Nebraska.
