Santa Fe College’s Veterans and Military Success Services (VMSS), in collaboration with the Institute of Public Safety, will host the 13th annual Steps of Remembrance event on Thursday, September 11. The event is open to the public and aims to honor firefighters, first responders, and others who lost their lives during the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Attendees are invited to symbolically retrace the 110 stories of the World Trade Center Twin Towers by walking 2,200 steps, which equals about four and a half laps around the track. Display boards positioned along the route will present a timeline of events from that day and highlight moments of heroism.
The ceremony begins at 9:00 a.m. at Santa Fe College’s main campus track in Gainesville. It will start with the Pledge of Allegiance and include remarks from guest speakers. Participants who complete the walk will receive red, white, and blue buttons.
“At Santa Fe College, VMSS, our campus police department, and the SF Institute of Public Safety stands committed to honoring the courage, sacrifice, and resilience demonstrated by those effected by September 11, 2001,” said Carmelos Brown, VMSS assistant and a former Army Sgt. 1st Class with 21 years of active duty. “Through the Steps of Remembrance, we walk together as a community to ensure that the lives lost are never forgotten, and that the spirit of unity and service continues to guide us forward.”
