The U.S. Census Bureau has released the 2023 Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS), which offer data on business activities such as job creation and loss, establishment openings and closures, and firm startups and shutdowns. The statistics cover the entire economy and are broken down by various characteristics of establishments and firms. The BDS is an annual series that now spans from 1978 through 2023.

According to the Census Bureau, “The data provide measures of business dynamics, such as job creation and destruction, establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns for the economy overall and aggregated by establishment and firm characteristics. BDS is an annual time series spanning 1978 to 2023.”

The latest data can be accessed through several platforms: directly on the BDS website, via the Census API, or using BDS Explorer. The explorer tool allows users to view the full dataset with visualizations such as line charts, bar charts, and thematic maps. Its dashboard enables users to build custom tables and charts for analyzing business trends over time.

For additional information or to access these tools, visit the official BDS page or use BDS Explorer.
