The U.S. Census Bureau released on April 16 new summary reports and data tables from the 2025 Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll (ASPEP), offering a detailed look at state and local government employment across the country.
The release is significant because it provides updated statistics that are used by federal, state, and local governments, as well as education and research organizations, for comparative studies of government employment. These figures also help in developing the government component of the gross domestic product.
According to the Census Bureau, the survey includes information on full- and part-time employment, full-time equivalent positions, and gross monthly payroll statistics for March 2025. The data is broken down by governmental function such as financial administration, other types of administration, highways, and air transportation.
Along with these new tables for 2025, revised tables for both 2023 and 2024 have been made available. An individual unit file has also been released that contains all relevant data items by code within ASPEP; this file gives unit-level responses with descriptive details.
Additionally, a graphic titled ‘Public Sector Employment per 10,000 People in Selected States: 2025’ was published to show leading functions within state and local governments for that year. More information can be found at www.census.gov/programs-surveys/apes/data.html.
No formal news release accompanied this update; it was issued as a tip sheet.
